The plane of Earth is governed by exchange. Hayek's insight was that no central planner can ever have the dispersed local knowledge that millions of buyers and sellers collectively encode in price. The market is not a place. It is a discovery procedure — the only procedure a species without telepathy has ever found for coordinating at planetary scale.
Friedman's complementary insight was that the variable everyone underestimates is money itself. The political constraints on monetary policy — not the technical ones — are what bind currencies and what bind nations.
Liberty does not breed prosperity because freedom is morally pretty. Liberty breeds prosperity because freedom is the only environment in which the discovery procedure can run continuously without seizing. Selection requires variation; variation requires the right to differ.
Four parallel competitions, one substrate: biological competition at the cell and organism level; economic competition at the firm level; cultural competition at the meme level; and underneath all three, free will as the precondition that makes any of them legible as competition at all.
